Should I Decorate My Garage Door for the Holidays?

Tis the season of twinkling lights, ringing bells, and glittering decorations. If you are reading this, you are likely looking for a way to add even more cheer to your holiday display and are asking yourself, “Can I decorate my garage door?” The answer is YES! You most certainly can! Here is what you need to know about decorating your garage door and some ideas to get you started.

Garage Holiday Decor

Decorate Carefully

When decorating your garage door, there are a few aspects to consider so that you don’t damage anything.

  1. Avoid adding anything over a ¼ inch thick
  2. Keep everything under 1 lb of weight
  3. If your door is sectional, don’t have anything span over section joints
  4. Never nail anything into the garage door
  5. Use weather-resistant decorations only
  6. Practice proper electrical safety and keep all cords away from children and pets.

Garage Door Decorations

Are you ready to get started with decorating? Here are some ideas to get the wheels churning on your holiday cheer! Do them solo or involve the whole family by creating a new holiday tradition!

There are a vast array of available stickers and magnets that you can use to create a festive display. Presents, snowflakes, elves, and reindeer are just the beginning? You could make an entire winter wonderland with the help of the whole family!

Talented artists (or online shoppers) can choose a mural for their garage door display. You can even match it to your front door! Just make sure to make or purchase a mural that doesn’t harm or interfere with your door’s function.

Are you looking for a night display? You can set up a projector aimed at your garage door with moving holiday displays. By using a projector, nothing goes on your door, and cleanup is a breeze!

Maybe putting something directly on the door isn’t the right choice for you. Instead, you can decorate the trim around the door. You can hang garlands, bows, and other holiday décor easily. This will allow you to use much larger, heavier, and thicker decorations without worrying about harming the door.

Just like with trim, lights are best displayed around the door instead of on the door itself. Attaching lights to the door can get messy, so it is best to secure the lights to the frame of the door with roof clips (not nails!)

One Big Present

One of our favorite ideas is wrapping up the door like a giant present. All you have to do is take one long strip of water-resistant paper, felt, or plastic and place it horizontally across the door. Then add another one vertically (being aware of door joints). It is as simple as that!
